An iguana crosses the road in front of a mobility scooter. Nobody stops. Nobody reacts. This is completely normal in the Leonida Keys and that's exactly the point.

About

The Keys move at a pace that has nothing to do with efficiency and everything to do with the understanding that urgency is a mainland problem. A woman on a mobility scooter navigates around a green iguana without slowing down. A man walks a dog nobody else is looking at. The body shop across the street has a whale mural on the side. A shuttle van idles. The whole scene operates with the serene logic of a place that stopped caring about keeping up with anything a long time ago. Walk the island town strips with no destination and no timeline and the Keys will show you exactly what they are — which is a place that chose this.

Best Time to Visit

Mid-morning to early afternoon — the streets are most alive and most chaotic

Travel Tips

  • The iguanas have right of way. This is not a joke
  • The island town strips reward walking over driving — you miss everything at speed
  • The body shop murals and local signage are worth reading. The Keys communicate through them
