A cougar crosses the waterhole at the same time a deer drinks from it. Neither of them has made a decision yet. This is Mount Kalaga's wildlife at its most honest.

The forest waterhole is where Kalaga's food chain makes its terms explicit. A cougar — young, cautious, still assessing — crosses the shallow water at the left edge of the frame. At the same moment, a deer drinks from the right side of the same pool, its head down, not yet aware of what is six feet to its left. Two otters rest on the bank behind them, operating on a completely different risk calculus. The forest canopy filters the light to something green and diffused. The whole scene has the suspended quality of a moment that is about to resolve itself one way or another — and the resolution will not be peaceful. Find a waterhole in the Kalaga forest interior and set up at a distance with time to wait. The wildlife comes to these points on a schedule that the forest itself keeps. Arrive early. Stay quiet. Watch what happens.
