A man in a white tank under a fluorescent light. Another one with a bat. Plants that aren't ornamental. This is Port Gellhorn's actual economy — the one that keeps the lights on after the tourist money stopped coming.

About

Port Gellhorn's underground economy didn't replace the tourist economy — it filled the space the tourist economy left behind. The indoor operations scattered through the city's residential and commercial zones run under grow lights in rooms with covered windows, managed by people who have been doing this long enough to be relaxed about it and armed enough to have a reason to be. The man in the chair is not in a hurry. The man with the bat is not decorative. The plants are the reason the room exists and the reason nobody outside the room is supposed to know it does. Port Gellhorn's real business is conducted in rooms like this one, by people like these two, and it is what the city runs on now.

Travel Tips

  • The man in the chair makes the decisions. The man with the bat enforces them. Address your business to the chair
  • Do not arrive unannounced. Do not arrive armed. Do not arrive with anyone who wasn't invited
  • The fluorescent light flicker is not an accident. It is how the room tells you the situation is being assessed
